Kathai runs entirely in the browser: no accounts, no servers, no tracking. Books you upload stay on your device. It turns books you already own into audiobooks, without a subscription or anyone watching what you read.
You can narrate chapters with your system's built-in voice, with speed control, auto-advance and sentence highlighting. It saves your place, can import free books from Project Gutenberg, and works offline as an installable app after the first visit.
It's built with Svelte 5, TypeScript, epub.js and IndexedDB, and it doubles as a way to learn a range of web technologies. Still to do: a better on-device neural voice, a settings panel and an accessibility pass.
